Chewy Caramel!

.

I just made a batch. I'd made this recipe last year. I considered it a failed recipe, as it did not set well, but it was soooooo unbeleeeeeeeeeevably delicious that I couldn't wait to make it again. Our annual candied apple party should be happening again soon, so I probably need to made a firmer batch. Until then, this will do nicely.

It's been raining ever since yesterday when we were drenched putting up the two rows of chest high 2x4 purlins on the greenhouse yesterday. We came in absolutely soaked to the skin and rivulets running, but I kept smiling as I looked out the window at the finished frame. I love progress.

Today I've satisfied myself with a more domestic agenda. Namely attacking all these stacks of paperwork on the desk and floor. Mostly this is a variety of things I begin to do and don't finish. My mind works a mile a minute with gobs of ideas. These are the ones that hit me anywhere from 2 am to 6 am, when I can't sleep. I can't resist beginning to flesh them out, then I lay them aside to get busy on what cannot wait to be done around here. Also mixed in are research piles of information on various farm projects, like what blueberries to plant. I've got a stack of blueberry, ribe, and bramble information. Lots of schoolwork folders and papers, records and such.

And the receipts. The ones I never take the time to file away, but just pull out of my purse and drop in one place. Months on end until I can't stand the stack any longer and I'm stuck in the house that day.

So I own my desktop again. I am - Master of the Veneered Particle Board Expanse once again. There is a perfect spot for a cup of tea, just to the left of this screen.

Michael has been doing schoolwork, cleaning his room, and messing with all his airsoft and paintball gear, so he's happy as a clam, with a gun. Hmmmmm....

Working on those idioms...

  1. Oh, yum, that sounds good! I have been thinking about making caramel. I sure know what you mean about mind-racing with projects. I have so many that I need to do NOW, it feels like....and Christmas coming so soon, too.

  2. You're getting the hang of this no picture posting, I can "see" a clean desk in my minds eye the way you describe it.

Heaven knows there are no clean desks here to see.....

  3. That caramel sounds yummy! I'm imagining how they look like...
Good job with the green house, and the uncluttering!
Faith, pop over to my site, I have a quiz for you!

  4. Nancy,

I am looking forward to you posting some tutorials on all your baking. I've never heard of anyone making pop tarts before. I'd love to see it.

Ha! Don't forget Thanksgiving. LOL 8 days away. I've done nothing so far. A few years ago I began saving my favorite recipes on a clipboard, always meaning to put into a holiday binder. I'm glad I at least have a clipboard to cling to.

  5. Chai,

I don't believe you. Post lots of pictures to prove it. LOL

I can't tell you how many times I've had to shove stuff out of the way to get a better photo in here. Usually my counters are covered in things.

Right now I've got 3 huge pumpkins (50 cents each after Halloween) that will do just fine as winter squash, some canned goods we pulled out of storage to use up this week, dried peppers that fell off my ristras, a variety of medicine bottles for the dog, the juicer and paraphernalia, the bread machine, a sack of potatoes...

I think I tend to leave them out because I'm so busy that if I don't - I forget to do anything with them. Sad, just sad....

  7. Grrr... Algebra. I was up an hour and a half with the 12 year old working on Pre-Algebra. There is a reason I teach English.....

My kids like to have Pop Tarts, and when we were tight, I thought - surely, there is a way to make these at home! I found that great recipe (posted in that blog) that worked out well. They didn't look that even or pretty, though - need some work before I can post a tutorial :).

As far as Thanksgiving - my parents are coming over from Oahu. I have already bought the turkeys, cranberries, pumpkin for the pies (didn't see any real pumpkins in the stores this year :( ). I am ready for the marathon of cooking!

My sister in Greece couldn't find a good pumpkin - the closest thing was a green pumpkin - she made green pumpkin pies out of desperation.

  9. Nancy,

Pumpkin shortages in Hawaii and Greece!

They are in the stores here, but cost twice as much for a little pie pumpkin as a large large one. I've eaten both and there wasn't enough different to me to warrant that. Some of the best squash I've eaten was from volunteer "Zucchins". I named them that as I'm pretty sure the pumpkins crossed with the zucchini and tasted great. Now I eat them all.

  11. Oh, my, Faith and Chai, I could see Becca Boo baking pies, too - very funny.

We have these kabocha pumpkins which are very delicious - you eat the skin, too. I just don't know if they would make a pie. The outside of them is green, but inside they are orange and very sweet, softer than your normal pumpkin. I am trying to grow some, but I had to put them in the non-fenced garden, and the dogs keep digging the seed up - they love the seed for some reason.

I am new to sheep, do they like pumpkin?
